Translators and interpreters, the phrase which is common for both or the term which explains them better is “multiple languages”. The role of both translators and interpreters is explaining the content in unknown language efficiently to the people in the form of written document or oral communication. Both of them should have deep knowledge about the languages and tricky terms of the languages they are dealing with. Most of the translation company is found with interpretation service. The doubt arises in many people’s mind or some people may have false belief that translators and interpreters are same and all the translators can do the interpretation work or vice verse. To know the fact and answer for the doubt read further paragraphs

Translators and interpreters:

  • ·        Starting with similarity between them, both of them should have through knowledge in at least two languages and should be familiar with the history of language and origin of the word. This helps them to use correct word at correct place.
  • ·        Coming to the nature of work, their function is same i.e. conversion of contents from source language to destination language without deviating from the target content.
  • ·        Though the job nature is similar the way they carry them is entirely different. Translators deal with the written documents whereas an interpreter does the translation orally and doesn’t need written assistance.
  • ·        The translators concentrate on legal documents and business related documents but the interpreters translate on the spot so their job will be under the surveillance of public. So care should be taken while translating words.
  • ·        The professional translators take more time to complete the work than interpreters because they are dealing with legal files. They take more time to analyze whether the word satisfies the target or doesn’t have any restriction.
  • ·        Translators are supposed to have more linguistic knowledge than interpreters. As all know people who speak the language cannot become writer or poet. It needs special skill. Likewise translators need special, unique skill about the target language.
  • ·        It is enough for the interpreters, if they know the language little more than native speakers. But the most difficult task involved in there is instant translation. To become interpreters they should have skill of stage speakers as well.
  • ·        Interpreters should have the listening skill and presence of mind to manage the situation in public whereas translators should have the knowledge about legal criteria of both the countries and professional terms.
From the above mentioned points it is clear that all the translators cannot become the interpreters and vice versa is also not possible. Though the field is same the way carry the work is entirely different. To become translators and interpreter, a person should satisfy all the above mentioned needs.
